While a resume is very technical a cover letter is an introduction.  You want to give the potential employer an overview of your experience and why you’re the best fit, so tailor your cover letter to each job.

Create a professional header that includes your name in large fonts, below that type your home address, phone number and email address. Then you want to date the letter and add the company name and address. Some companies have multiple locations, in that case leave it blank, unless the address is on the job description.

Address the cover letter to the appropriate party “Dear Ms/Mr.” If the name isn’t available its okay to say “Dear Hiring Manager”. In some cases you may need to type “Dear Human Resources Manager” or “Dear Members of the Board.” This is why it’s so important to pay attention to the job posting.

The first paragraph is your ‘hook’, capture the reader’s interest right from the start. You want to do this by explaining your desire to work for the company and the value you bring to the team. Avoid generic statements like the following:
“I’m an experienced communications professional and I’m interested in the Communications Coordinator position advertised on your website.”

Instead, talk about your desire to work for the company coupled by your skills and experience. A statement that speaks to your strengths and enthusiasm.

E.g., “Every now and then a candidate with the experience, talent and persistence to get the job done answers your ad. In my 5 years working in media and communications I developed into an effective communicator with some creative flair. I’m excited to learn that XYZ Inc. is seeking a Communications Coordinator. It would be a pleasure to meet with you so I can demonstrate how my abilities will fit your needs”

This is a strong opening statement for a communications professional, it demonstrates writing skills while telling the employer a little bit about the candidate’s background and desire to work for their company.

The following paragraphs speak about relevant work experience for three employers, e.g.,
“I spent 3 years at Company A developing marketing campaigns, creating newsletters and managing social media content for public events.  Which resulted in an increase in attendance, consequently local business reported an average of 15% increase in revenue.”

This highlights experience using online communications platforms and touches on the candidate’s accomplishments.

Conclude the cover letter by reminding them the value you will bring to the company and you welcome any questions they may ask.

“My experience in communications crosses a variety of platforms; this gave me an excellent understanding on how different mediums operate. From my work at Company A to my experience at Company B, I picked up the tools I need to excel at your organization.”

“Attached is my resume, I also added a few writing samples for your review. Thank you for your time and consideration. If you have any questions please call 555-5555 or email me at email@email.com”

Remember, a cover letter is the first impression, so ensure it’s professional, organized and clear. Think of it as a promotional message, but always be honest and accurate.
